LIMSOC Terms and Abbreviations

A quick glossary of the terms and abbreviations you'll see across LIMSOC.

  • Callsign: a unit's short identifier on the radio and in LIMSOC.

  • Surfcom: Surf Life Saving Queensland's communications centre, which coordinates units and incidents statewide.

  • Unit: a club, service or officer role that can be on duty.

  • Sign on / Sign off: starting and ending a unit's period of duty.

  • Patrol strength: whether a patrol is Full, Partial or Surveillance / Low Patronage.

  • IRB: Inflatable Rescue Boat, a type of powercraft.

  • IRL: Incident Report Log, your unit's record of its involvement in an incident.

  • FAL / First Aid Log: the record of a first aid treatment. Minor first aids are counted in patrol statistics; major first aids get a full log.

  • Rescue log: the record of a water rescue.

  • SRR: Surf Risk Rating, the daily hazard assessment that gives a risk level and control measures.

  • SMEACS: Situation, Mission, Execution, Administration, Command & Communication, Safety. A briefing format for planning an activity.

  • Stinger drag: a net drag to check for marine stingers, which gives a calculated risk level.

  • Preventative action: an action taken to prevent an incident, such as moving swimmers away from a rip.

  • SurfGuard: SLSA's national membership and patrol-hours system. LIMSOC pulls rosters from it and sends patrol hours back.

  • Roster / Team: the members rostered or logged on a patrol.

  • Peer Support / PSO: post-incident wellbeing follow-up, carried out by Peer Support Officers.

  • Methoxyflurane: pain-relief medication tracked in the Medication Register.

  • LGA: Local Government Area, used to filter reports.

  • Region / Area: the operational region a unit belongs to.

  • 13 SURF: the public phone line (13 78 73) for reporting incidents to Surf Life Saving.
